Councillor Ron Hazleton (Conservative)

Coast Ward Portishead and North Weston

Ron was born in 1936 and at the age of eleven attended the local grammar school.  Immediately on leaving school he entered the army and spent three years in Hong Kong before entering an accountant’s office in London.  Having spent four years there, he then joined the hotel company Trust House Forte working as an hotel accountant for them in both Swansea and  Stratford-upon-Avon.  He had by then met and married Hilary and they eventually had two children.  They then emigrated to South Africa where he worked as an hotel accountant with Southern Sun Hotels before being offered the job as deputy general manager with the Durban Country Club, a position which he held for three years.

They returned to the UK in 1978 and both Ron and Hilary took employment with Courage Brewery with whom they worked for twenty six years before retiring in 2004.

They have a son Mark who now runs the Poacher public house and a daughter Nicola who is a full time wife and mother.  Ron and Hilary have six grandchildren.

Ron is a keen cyclist and gardener and his hobbies are researching the history of the Poacher and the study of the postal history of Belgium.

Councillor Don Cameron (Conservative)

Coast Ward Portishead and North Weston

Don Cameron was born in Scotland in 1939. He studied aero engineering at Glasgow University and did post-graduate study at Cornell University in the USA. He came to the Bristol area in 1963 to work in the aircraft industry. He expected to remain for a year or two, but after 44 years is still here!

In 1967 he took part in a project to build the first modern hot-air balloon in Western Europe called the “Bristol Belle” and this led to the founding of Cameron Balloons a couple of years later. The company is now the largest manufacturer of balloons in the world. Don was also the founder of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta which will take place in 2007 for the 29th time.

He has lived in Portishead for almost 27 years with his wife Maggie; they have seven children. He has always taken an interest in local affairs. He was, for many years, a governor of High Down Infants’ School and is currently honorary president of 2494 (Portishead) Squadron Air Training Corps.
