Councillor Mrs Jean Lord (Liberal Democrat)
Redcliffe
Bay
Ward Portishead and North Weston
In 1966 Jean took her degree in Mathematics and Psychology at Durham University and moved to Portishead from her home in Lancashire. After a short spell at Gordano School, she moved to Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol, over time becoming Head of Mathematics and Deputy Head. In 1984 she was appointed Head of Stroud High School, from where she took early retirement in 1999. Throughout her career, she took an active part in the wider educational world, representing the professional interests of teachers at local and national level. As a member of the Mathematical Association, she sat on the Council and on the Board which supervised a Diploma for primary school mathematics coordinators. As a Head, she was involved with national consultations on a fairer funding system for schools across the country. Jean was first elected to the Council in 2003 and she has very much enjoyed the opportunity to work for the town. In was a particular honor to be elected Chairman and she relished the opportunities it gave to visit community organizations and to lobby for the needs of the town in Weston-super-Mare and elsewhere. She still works as a magistrate and with Portishead Railway Group. In her leisure time, she continues taking the piano lessons she gave up in her teens and enjoys travel, theatre and eating out.

Councillor Mrs Nicola Way (Conservative) Redcliffe Bay Ward Portishead and North Weston I grew up in Norwich and my family then moved to Weston-super-Mare in 1965. I have lived in Portishead for 33 years, having moved here on my marriage in 1974; the last 12 years being in Redcliffe Bay. Most of my career has been I the nursing profession but I also spent 8 years as a social worker in central Bristol, dealing with generic problems. I now work at Bristol University on a child health research study which I have been doing for 16 years. Our daughter has been a Town Councillor and we have a family history with my father and uncle also councillors and mayors. My interests are mainly animal rescue charities and fundraising in support of these. I was a member of Portishead Lions for 4 years. I also run a ladies social group, part of the Red Hat Society which is a world organisation for friendship and fun for ladies in their second half-century. I am on two committees in the local Conservative Party. I have always been interested in politics and I am of the opinion it is no good grumbling about something unless you are prepared to try and change it.
