Portishead Town Council Jubilee events hailed a huge success

The town council at Portishead organised two amazing events over the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

The lighting of a Beacon at Battery point took place on the evening of 2 June and was jointly organised with Gordano District Scouts. Thousands of people witnessed this historic spectacle. The Beacon was huge and impressive and to add to the occasion, the crowd were also entertained by local singers performing the nation's tribute, "A Life Lived with Grace".

The following day a Community Event was also arranged by the Town Council, the first of its kind for Portishead and was an amazing event for everyone who came along. Held at the Show Field, thousands attended and joined in the celebrations and free entertainment.  Free stalls were provided for local businesses who were selling their crafts, food and drinks. To entertain everyone, there was music from The Rock Project and children’s entertainment with Action Pussycat with facepainting, jubilee craft from Community Scrapstore North Somerset, forest skills fun, play equipment from North Somerset Play Forum and a great Punch and Judy show.

The Community Event was such a huge success that Portishead Town Council are planning to hold this as an annual summer event for everyone in Portishead to come together and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment with family and friends.

Cllr Ben Aldridge, who was on the planning team said, “The Community Event was a meteoric success and was so well received by stall holders and those attending. Next year will be bigger and better, and we want Portishead to come together annually to celebrate our wonderful town.”

A big thank you goes to the organisers, suppliers and many volunteers who helped before and during the show and thank you to all the Portishead residents who came along and supported this event. Over £1,600 was collected in donations and will be split equally between 2 worthwhile local causes, the Portishead Wheels and Skatepark Project and the Portishead Christmas Lights, which were chosen by residents at the Portishead Residents meeting held in May 2022.
